one of two things: he either did a little conversational hypnosis like usual and programmed this kid to put it in the first chamber and then the rest was for TV, OR he took a huge chance and studied the kid's face while he remembered the number to himself, and also listened to subtle clues while he counted "1-2-3-4-5"
