I believe it was a gun shot. When the girl is walking through the hall she hears it, is startled, jumps and takes off to the bathroom to find him there.

so much potential, so many great acheivements of what's effects could have reached out as far as us, and no, not only the kids personified through this video, but the thousands it's happened to. the bad things that happen to kids in those times of life, whats it all worth? whats it matter 20 years from now that you made fun of that kid, moved away, and had know idea he dwelled on it, to inexorably end his own life.
