well besides the fact it blocks the development of the knight and opens a diagnal to your king f3? doesnt really seem like a good move. the alekhine defense dares you to over extend and after you do you should probably just develop and leave the pawns alone for a while.

I don't know if that line goes out any farther, but there are quite a few other lines in the Alekhine that I feel are more promising. If we are restricting White to the Exchange Vartiation, I personally prefer 5...cxd6 rather than 5...exd6. Taking with the e pawn retains symmetrical pawn structure and is IMO too drawish. After ...cxd6 Black fianchetoes the kingside bishop and sets up a position similar to that seen in the Sicilian Dragon.

I used to play Alekhine's defence a lot until I came across an increasing number of Mikenas variations which make things a bit more awkward for black. Thus after 3 ... Nc6
4 c5 Nd5 5 Bc4 e6 6 Nc3. Any thoughts ?
