Infact what you are saying is probably the same way the man in this video is teaching as well. sounds familiar? "martial, seroius" AND OF COURSE " effective" ?
Everyoen thinks its such an achievemnt to hurt someone and even badly however I have done that and i learned the hard way..to be effective is to not to be effective at all.

You are new to aikido and the New York life.
We train really hard because times are hard and we need our aikido to really work.
I am so sorry but some of my students are law enforcement and dont play around. For them Aikido training is martial and serious and not as spiritual.
Their main goal is to protect and be home for dinner with their families, so I train them hard.

Self mastery?
Self mastery is a myth! Is your behavior so bad that you have come to the conclusion that you need to not only straighten up but
to spend as much time on yourself as possible to keep yourself from making mistakes?
Dude. we have women and laws that help us with right and wrong so if you are not breaking laws them lighten up. Reclaim your mind and go see a movie once in a while. The dojo will be there when you get back.
I wish my sensei would have shared that with me. :)

Look man, i like you as a person so i am going to say this once. Put down that Aikido bible that you have and use your brain.
As long as you want to speak in Aikido language you are under some kind of self deluted spell.
The best of the best in Aikido drink and womanize and will curse you if you do something deserving of it. So, stop living out of articles on Aikido and just follow the technicle principles of aikido and stop worshiping it.
There is a god but its not called Aikido.

True self master has nothing to do with beaing superhuman , its about being human and doing it in a honest , harmonious way .. behind and before the curtain that unfolds the universe.

Actually if you look at anyone who has mastery over aikido you will notice that it is extremely rare that they stand in front of the attacker. The #1 principle in Aikido is to get off of the line of attack.
If you notice, in almost every picture this gentleman is directly in front of the attack.
Hey, any teacher is helpful but you realy have to look around before buying what this teacher is selling.
I believe he can fight/defend himself but
he has not shown any Aikido mastery.

I have mastery over Aikido and have for some time now. But, there is no such thing as mastery over yourself. I have no idea what i am going to do today let alone tomorrow.
This concept of self mastery is to imprison your mind to do exactly what someone else wants you to do for their goals.
No matter how much you study you are still human with human weaknesses and needs. Anyone who dissagrees is selling you a product, a dream, more classes or comes from another planet.
