Anyways... this is a 10 minute clip. We don't know how long he works with these students, so we can't know what he does/did before/after this clip. Like any good Sensei, I'm sure he corrects technique as he sees errors. No one wants to learn sloppy technique- but realistically, that's how it's going to be in a fight. Most professional fighters I personally know, learn no-gi first, then train with a gi to tighten up their technique for the reason you stated.

Please watch UFC, Pride, WEC, DREAM, etc. There are dozens of fighters that use these throws. Karo, GSP, Aoki, Sokoudjou, Florian, etc. I train with Rashad Evans and his grappling coach Matt Torres, and he's asked me about some Judo throws to supplement his wrestling. FYI, I'm a Sankyu certified by the USJF, under Sensei Tom Sheehan, MSU Judo Club. Sensei Sheehan is a RokuDan (6th Degree Black Belt), and has personally instructed me for over 3 years- I know what I'm talking about.

I used to practice judo and competed in tournaments, but now I have a family and a full time job and its realy hard to find some extra time for martial arts. Maybe one day I'll get back into it.

doeiffeo (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)

How about....Because Regular competition Judo or judo "the art" doesn't mean a damn thing unless you know how to apply it when you've got trained professionals swinging at your face and kicking at your body.

Some of those asbestos ceiling tiles are missing. I guess some of the slam throws get tossed purty high...

How does the Karo poem about Judo Throws go again?

I wasn't talking about gi or no gi. I was talking about the technique. He shows variation and not breaking the move down. I don't understand why would anyone want to throw sloppy, instead of learning correct technique and then perfecting it. Please, name me one BJJ fighter or wrestler who uses uchi-mata, saionagi, osoto-gari in their fights. None of them do, cause these are difficult moves to actually implement without constant practice. |
