Gotta agree with ChaosTURBO. If he were to fight a boxer or a karate guy, he would be much more limited than against human rag dolls throwing their weight against him. He might still have a chance, but really this martial art is useless since it was made to stop conflicts peacefully and without injuring your opponent.

Of course Aikido is all about demos, not real and not effective! Ueshiba designed the system so he could pretend to disarm Samurai when they were pretending to kill him with razor sharp pretend Katanna!

greatblaise - If I can learn to give way as fast as the attack, then my training partner can strike as fast as possible, without pulling his punch. The techniques in Aikido are extremely fluid to develop speed & power for both people, but contain many strikes that someone would run into by not moving like a trained Aikidoka. That fluid technique breaks down into a bunch of short nasty punches, knees, elbows, shoulders, claws, & (if your sensei teaches them) even kicks, in a real fight.

greatblaise - Good, logical questions. Think of standing very close as someone punches at your face. As the punch reaches you, you bend backward, avoiding the punch. Because it happens so fast, the back bend becomes a back-flip or a roll & then you're 5 or 6 feet away. It's the principle of non-resistance. Now think that as you start to bend back you bring up your foot striking the attacker. That's defensive non-resistance becoming practical & effective offensive martial arts. Hope that helps...

I don't have any video like that, but I am talking about that because I lived it on my own skin. I've been training Kick-boxing for 5 years and my friend is training aikido for 7 years. I am like 40 cm higher and twice his weight and he beated me like I was some rookie. it's truth that I hitted him few times when he didn't get techniques right but most of the time I flew around like a bird. and I had to jump to fall, because if I wouldn't he could break my arm... belive it or not. aikido is real

Aikido is real. You watch too much MMA and Mortal Combat. Join a dojo and make an informed comment.

Honestly, if you doubt aikido's effectiveness just go work out at an aikido dojo for a month or two and see what you think. You may stick to your guns or change your mind. Aikidoists don't compete AS A RULE, it's part of training. So you don't see them competing. That's a different issue than the martial veracity of the techniques.

Aikido is great. Segal is an asshole.
