davef73, i agree with you too.
i take ninjutsu and were taught to step out of the way of the attack and THEN begin taking the steps to put yourself in the dominant position.
my friend is gonna start aikido soon and were gonna blend together my ninjutsu and jiujitsu with his aikido so its gonna be such an awesome mixed style haha
pure japanese wreckage

one of the best technique in fighting... smooth but quick and death

I totally agree with chushintani. don't be deceived by appearances. I have experienced these so called gentle and effortless techniques. what happens is such a small move that cannot be seen even if you are there in person. you will definitely feel it if you are on the receiving end. you will go down to prevent damage to yourself. its different to co-operation. the cooperation is to help people to improve without being hospitalised.

excellent points. If you see it as doing something to someone then it ain't aikido. also as soon as the defender starts to plan a specific move or technique the brain takes over and the body slows down the feet are stuck to the floor and dynamism is lost. besides combat is not a controlled situation so you must react to what is actually happening not what you think is about to happen. live in the moment or you are finished. I am lucky to have found an excellent instructor to point all this out.

dead right. most people apparantly get stabbed trying to take the weapon. at my aikido school we are taught to GET OUT OF THE WAY first. the laws of physics apply here. it is very hard to block a strike/stab as usually there is a lot of force behind it. rule number one is keep any attack at a distance if you can don't rush to try a technique every attack is unique you must adapt to the situation.

one reason may be that aikido is not a sport per se. there are no small joint manipulations allowed in UFC you aren't allowed break a guys fingers as far as I know. you can't eye gouge or strike to the crotch etc either. also real fights are messy and dont last 3 or 5 5min rounds. usually second often with bottles knives etc. all our instructor tells us is that aikido teaches you to MOVE and not to panic in a situation. after that it depends on the individual like all martial arts really.

I would agree with most of what you say. at the aikido club i practise at we are told that you will not have time to pull off a technique in a multiple attack situation, all you can do is move and try to mantain your front. Our instructor is extremely practical. if you give him a chance (ie stay static or attack in an unrealistic manner) he will punch, strike or kick and not in a way that telegraphs whats about to happen. It really depends on the person how effective any art will be. |
