He said in an interview ,that 1973 was a club he went to . And Yes he was in the British Army in Kosavo as a soldier,"Carry you home" is about a fellow soldier(female) that died on patrol.

It's like Brian Adams and that summer of 69 song. He was four. The Smashing Pumpkins, I beleive, sang the song 1979. They were three or four. I think it's just an artist taking a poetic look at what might have been for them then. That's just my two cents, though. Hope it helped.
