yea drop c tuning, blast beats, obscure vocals, pointless songs about death and suffereing r all fine to some extent, but they get exetremely unoriginal after a while

yeah i agree that most 80's bands werent that heavy, but you got to give them credit where its due. Slayer was pretty heavy, so was exodus and some of the underground thrash bands. But yeah, I think they are almost as heavy as any band should ever get. Because in my mind metal has gotten a little too heavy lately. I think that there is a fine line between really heavy songs and shitty songs.
